WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT
Background to Situation

Makami village is situated in North West of Kiteto District, in the southern part of Manyara region in northern of Tanzania. The village lies 28kms from Arusha/Kibaya main road. 108kms from Kibaya (district headquarters) and 248m form Arusha town. The village is connected to the main road by a very poor road, which is impassable during rain seasons. The village ha a population of about 2084 people. The area predominately inhabited by pastoral marginalized Masaai with livestock population of 82,000 cattle, 54,000 goats and 1,500 donkeys. A portion of population 2% is engaged in Agro-pastoralism, they grow maize and beans.

Makamin area is mostly semi arid due to recurrent droughts. Since 1996, it has been receiving less than 800mm of rainfall per annum. The only sources of water in the area are traditional water points found 8kms away from the village centre compared to the national set distance of 400meters.
Planned Intervention to Address Development Needs.

AAIDRO would like to assist the Makami people through the implementation of water and sanitation project. The Makami Water and Sanitation Project will involve drilling of shallow wells, installation of hand pumps and distribution of water to long cattle troughs at 4 different points.

AAIDRO will collaborate with other stakeholders in the area to ensure community participation at all stages of the project cycle in order to build capacity of the beneficiaries and instill community ownership of the project. This approach is in line with the current policy on rural water supply which stipulated that "The villages have to form village water committee an water fund accounts for operation and maintenance of water supply project. Also villagers have to participate fully in form of cash and labour to all the activities of their water supply projects".
